How to fit a magnetic bag fastener / magnetic bag clasp

I'm sure everyone has their own way of fitting a magnetic bag clasp, depending on the project they are working on. But in response to a number of enquiries I have included a description of how  I do it.

Each magnetic snap is composed of two snaps and two washers. On one side of each of the magnetic snaps are two prongs that go through the cloth and a washer at the other side of the cloth, which you then bend over to secure the snap in place.  Once the two snaps are in place they will snap together when brought to close to each other. No special tools, machines or sewing necessary.

My essential tools:-
1.  Pencil
2.  Small hammer - like a toffee hammer
3.  Chisel with a 6mm tip (approximately)
4.  A block of wood  for hammering the
chisel into - rather than the table!

1.
Take the lining and make a fold about 2"
from the top edge. This will fold over the
back side (if you excuse the expression)
of the clasp when fitted.

2.
Cut a square of stiffer material to
go between the lining and clasp to
make it more secure - not absolutely necessary.
Place just under the fold.

3.
Place a clasp washer on the stiffening fabric
(or back of lining if not using any) in the position
the clasp will eventually go. With the pencil mark
the cloth through the two rectangular slots.

4.
Take the washer away and you should
be left with the two pencil marks
where the clasp prongs will
eventually go.

5.
Place the material on the the wooden block.
Take the chisel and place the edge on the pencil
line. Hit the the top end of the chisel handle
to drive it through the layers of material. Repeat.

6.
Turning the material over you can see where
the chisel has gone through the lining.
Using a chisel give a clean cut and lines
up the cuts through two layers of material.

7.
Push the clasp prongs through the
two layers of materials so that
the prongs are showing
through the 'wrong' side of lining.

8.
  Using the hammer head,
ease the prong downwards,
away from the washer.
Repeat with other prong.

9.
This is what it should look like
at the back of the material with
both prongs bent back.

This is what it should look like
on the good side.

11.
Fold the 2" of material down over the back
of the clasp. It is now ready to be sewn to
the outerfabric.  Repeat steps 1 to 11 with
the corresponding clasp side.
